WASHINGTON — Federal and local authorities are intensifying their search for two gunmen after a U.S. Park Police (USPP) officer was targeted and shot in what officials are describing as a deliberate ambush in Southeast Washington on Monday night.
The veteran officer, whose name has not yet been released, was conducting an ongoing investigation in an unmarked vehicle when he was fired upon. While initially reported to be in critical condition, latest updates from the U.S. Park Police indicate the officer has since been released from the hospital and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, as reported by Fox 5 DC.

Details of the Assault on Queens Stroll Place
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. in the 5100 block of Queens Stroll Place SE. According to U.S. Park Police Chief Scott Brecht, the officer was driving an unmarked white Tesla when at least two suspects opened fire.
Despite being struck in the shoulder, the officer was able to continue driving for several blocks to escape the immediate danger before pulling over to receive medical assistance. Due to the severity of the situation and the terrain, the officer was airlifted by a U.S. Park Police helicopter to a nearby trauma center.
Interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll stated during a late-night press briefing that investigators believe the officer was specifically targeted. "There’s no reason that anybody, a police officer or not a police officer, should be shot just for being out here driving through the neighborhood," Carroll said, according to a report from Action News Jax. Chief Carroll added that evidence suggests the assailants may have known the occupant was a law enforcement officer despite the unmarked vehicle.
The Regional Security Context
This shooting comes at a time of heightened security concerns within the District. In late 2025, the city was shaken by an ambush-style attack on two National Guard members near the White House, an event that led to increased federal presence and a "law-enforcement surge" across the capital.
The Marshall Heights neighborhood, where Monday's shooting took place, has historically struggled with high rates of gun violence. Law enforcement officials noted that at least one surveillance camera in the area captured footage of the incident, which is currently being reviewed by a joint task force including the FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
Federal Response and Support
The shooting has drawn immediate attention from the highest levels of the Department of Justice. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed she has been in direct communication with Mayor Muriel Bowser and Chief Carroll regarding the investigation.
FBI Director Kash Patel also released a statement on social media, noting that the FBI is "actively supporting the investigation alongside our law enforcement partners" and vowing to "bring those responsible to justice," according to CBS News.
Why This Matters
The ambush of a federal officer in an unmarked vehicle raises significant questions regarding operational security and the safety of undercover units in the District.
-
Operational Risks: The fact that the officer was driving an unmarked vehicle—and a specific model like a Tesla—yet was reportedly recognized as law enforcement suggests a possible breach in surveillance tactics or a sophisticated level of counter-surveillance by local criminal elements.
-
Jurisdictional Reach: While the U.S. Park Police primarily manage federal parklands like the National Mall, Chief Brecht reminded the public that their jurisdiction extends throughout the entirety of Washington, D.C.
-
Public Safety Trends: This event underscores a "dangerous trend" previously cited by the Department of Homeland Security regarding a rise in assaults against federal agents performing routine and investigative duties in urban environments.
Ongoing Search for Suspects
As of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests have been made. Police have not yet released descriptions of the two gunmen or the weapons used, though they confirmed that multiple shell casings were recovered from the scene.
Authorities are urging anyone with information or additional surveillance footage from the Marshall Heights or Benning Road areas to contact the Metropolitan Police Department. The investigation remains a top priority for both local and federal agencies as they work to determine if the shooters are linked to the specific case the officer was investigating at the time of the attack.
