Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey were both scheduled to face the Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday, but due to technical difficulties, only Dorsey initially appeared. Eventually, after connection issues were resolved, both men would speak, and face a tough grilling from Senators, including Ted Cruz and John Thune.
Just ahead of the presidential election, the social media giants were strongly criticized by the Republicans over the controversial New York Post story they have attempted to censor, at different levels.
Alongside the testimony of Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai was also set face the Senate, although his testimony was expected to vary from Dorsey and Zuckerberg's.
At the beginning of this month, the Republican Sen. Roger Wicker summoned the three CEOs urging them to testify before the upcoming election.
In addition to the Communications Decency Act, Section 230, the main discussion topic centered around the social networks for suppressing the press in advance of a pivotal election.
In the days following Twitter and Facebook limiting the spread of the Post’s initial story about Joe Biden’s son Hunter, Republicans condemned the social platforms.
Now the GOP is afraid that next week Facebook and Twitter could limit any pro-Trump stories.
