UN Condemns Japan for Carlos Ghosn's Extended Imprisonment

The UN accuses the Japanese authorities of committing an “extrajudicial abuse of process” for prisoning the former CEO of Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, under financial allegations.

The 17-page report filed by the Council’s Group of United Nations pleaded Arbitrary Detention and stated it was “fundamentally unfair” for Ghosn to be arrested on four separate occasions and spending 129 days in jail.

Additionally, the attorneys of Ghosn claimed that while in prison, the defendant suffered solitary confinement and a lack of heating.

Although both statements are not connected, the UN organization insisted on an independent investigation of Ghosn’s “arbitrary” detention and fair compensation according to international law.

Despite the harsh statements against them, Japanese officials rejected the pleadings as in December, Carlos Ghosn escaped from Tokyo to Beirut with the help of two Americans.

The foreign ministry of Japan stated that it was wrong to make conclusions “based on limited information and biased allegations” before the trial has even started, and called the UN report “totally unacceptable.”

Meanwhile, Ghosn’s lawyer Jessica Finelle rejected Japan’s accusations against him, and stated that her client ran away to escape “persecution.”
