Walmart Sues the US Government Over Opioid Case

Walmart Inc has sued the US government over its pharmacy's prescription policies when it comes to opioids. The company reported it is threatened with a lawsuit by some Justice Department officials who believe Walmart pharmacies are contributing to the opioid epidemic by failing to deny suspicious prescription requests.

Walmart Contests DOJ Claims

In an official statement on Thursday, Walmart said they were starting this lawsuit "because there is no federal law requiring pharmacists to interfere in the doctor-patient relationship to the degree DOJ is demanding."

Walmart added that in the lawsuit against DEA and DOJ, they aim to clarify the US pharmacists’ rules and legal responsibilities and will plea for “unprecedented” penalties against not filing suspicious order reports. The DEA and the DOJ refused to comment on the issue.

The US Centers for Disease and Prevention’ records show that from 1999 to 2017, opioid addiction has killed nearly 400,000 people, and the industry critics claim that its manufacturers intentionally hide the risk of consumers’ addiction.
