What Dick’s! Sporting Goods Retailer Destroys 5 Million Dollars’ Worth of Guns

More than $5 million worth of assault rifles destroyed by Dick’s Sporting Goods after several incidents led to the CEO making the decision to stop selling the weapons.

Ed Stack announced that assault-style rifles and high-capacity magazines will be stopped from sale. The decision likely came from pressure from gun control groups after many incidents, including the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in which it was discovered that the shooter had killed 17 students and staff with arms purchased from a Dick’s Sporting Goods store.

“We found out that we sold this kid a shotgun. That’s when I said, ‘We’re done’,” Stack said and also confirmed that millions of dollars worth of weapons had been turned into scrap metal.

Alongside the destruction of firearms, the company also changed its sales policy to require a minimum age of 21 for weapons, a move that cost the company $250 million in sales, surprisingly however, the stocks were not affected by the decision. It was likely anticipated and calculated, considering that earlier in the year a 10-store test where no weapons were sold showed positive results – leading another 125 locations to also stop selling guns and rifles.

Other companies have also followed Dick’s – Walmart announced in September that handgun sales in Alaska would be stopped, as well as ammunition for handguns and short-barrel rifles all throughout the nation, possibly pressured by an employee petition, signed by more than 120,000 people, protesting the weapon sales after a shooting at a Walmart location in El Paso, Texas.
