San Francisco Area School to Be Renamed in Honor of Michelle Obama

A San Francisco Bay-area elementary school plans to honor Michelle Obama by assuming the former first lady’s name.

Second Californian Michelle Obama School

El Cerrito’s Wilson Elementary School is getting both a makeover for the new 2020-2021 school year, as well as a new name to inspire both the students and the staff.

“We wanted to choose someone on a global level. With a new school and new learning environment, we want our children to think beyond Richmond, to think beyond California, and remind them that they can make a difference locally and globally,”

Wilson PTA president Maisha Cole

The decision to change the school’s name came after the school’s PTA recommended it, passing through a district vote, as well as two public meetings with parents, students, and the entire community. The vote was unanimous in favor of renaming the school, including the full board.

The name change also has quite a lot of meaning to board president Stephanie Hernandez-Jarvis as she wants it to serve to set “high expectations” for students and staff alike, as well as represent “our diversity and values,” focusing on innovation and being modern while preparing the students for a successful future.

Wilson Elementary School will be renamed to the Michelle Obama Elementary School for the new school year, CNN first reported after a press release by the West Contra Costa Unified School District Board.
