Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen, was killed by security personnel on March 12, 2026, after ramming a vehicle into Temple Israel and initiating a shootout while 140 children were inside the facility.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has classified the breach of the West Bloomfield synagogue as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.” While the suspect was neutralized at the scene, the incident has triggered a massive federal investigation into the motive and planning behind the assault.

Details of the Temple Israel Breach
The timeline of the attack indicates a high level of deliberation. Shortly after noon, Ghazali drove a truck through the primary entrance of Temple Israel, one of the largest Reform synagogues in the United States.
The vehicle continued down a main hallway before coming to a stop and catching fire. The observation of the scene data shows that the ensuing fire was likely accelerated by flammable materials or explosives found within the vehicle. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard confirmed that while the truck was ablaze, Ghazali engaged armed synagogue security in a gun battle.

Investigation into Suspect’s Motive and Background
The FBI’s Detroit Field Office, led by Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Runyan, is currently processing the suspect’s residence in Dearborn Heights.
When examining the suspect’s recent history, federal records and community sources revealed several potential catalysts for the violence. Ghazali, who immigrated from Lebanon in 2011 and became a citizen in 2016, had recently experienced significant personal loss.
Hours before the attack, Ghazali reportedly shared images of his deceased relatives on WhatsApp. Sources in the Lebanese-American community noted that Ghazali had become increasingly withdrawn and had recently stopped working at a local restaurant.
Emergency Response and Security Protocols
The rapid neutralization of the threat has been credited to the synagogue’s private security team and local law enforcement’s active shooter training.
The presence of "mortar-type explosives" inside the vehicle suggests the potential for a much larger catastrophe had the fire not been contained. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) joined the FBI on-site to sweep the building for secondary devices.
Strategic Impact on Jewish Institutions
Following the West Bloomfield incident, law enforcement agencies in major cities, including Los Angeles and Chicago, have increased patrols around Jewish facilities. The attack occurred during a period of heightened regional tension, leading many congregations to implement "lockdown" drills similar to those credited with saving lives at Temple Israel.
